1. What is Freehold?
Freehold generally means ownership without a predetermined expiry date. Owners must still comply with land laws, title conditions and any applicable restrictions.
2. What is Leasehold?
Leasehold has a specified expiry date. A 99-year term is common, but buyers should check the actual years remaining on the title.
A simple exampleIf the lease expires in 2100 and you buy in 2026, about 74 years remain. A change of owner does not automatically restart the lease at 99 years.
3. Can the lease be extended?
An extension can be applied for, subject to state rules, approval and applicable premiums or fees. Approval is not automatic, and conversion to Freehold should never be assumed.
4. Is Freehold always the better choice?
Tenure is one part of the decision. Compare location, price, condition, management and your own needs alongside the remaining lease term.
Before you buy, ask:
- Is the property Freehold or Leasehold?
- If Leasehold, what is the expiry year?
- Are there transfer restrictions or approval requirements?
- Does the advertised information match the official title?
